Best Xbox One games: The top Triple-A and indie titles to play on Xbox One

Own an Xbox One, Xbox One S or Xbox One X? Here are the best games on Microsoft's family of Xbox One consoles

Microsoft’s original Xbox One was left dragging its heels compared to Sony’s PlayStation console, but both the slimmer Xbox One S and 4K-capable Xbox One X have flourished. They’re excellent homes for all sorts of games, from Triple-A blockbusters to indie adventures. Whether you’ve opted for the dirt-cheap Xbox One S, splurged on the 4K superiority of the Xbox One X, or still have your dusty old Xbox One under your TV, you’ll be wanting some decent games to play.

Here at Expert Reviews, we’ve always got an Xbox controller in our hands so we know which Xbox One games are worth diving into. From racing titles to action-packed shooters, all the bases are covered in our list of the best games you need to play in 2019 on your Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X.

Best Xbox One games to play in 2019

Hitman 2

Price: £16 | Buy now from Amazon

Agent 47 is back, with a bigger arsenal of weaponry than ever in IO Interactive’s follow-up to its immense 2016 Hitman reboot. Missions take place in immersive sandbox maps and as the story progresses you’ll globetrot from the Columbian rainforests to the slums of Mumbai to a secretive castle on an island in the Arctic sea. The graphics and attention to detail are incredible, as is the sound design, and each level has an amazing amount of replay value.

As with previous entries in the franchise, you can take the game as seriously or carelessly as you wish, focusing on silent assassinations or going all guns blazing – although the latter typically ends in your death. Agent 47’s endless array of costume disguises keeps things fresh and targets can be killed with everything from micro-explosives to household tools. Our weapon of choice? The deadly blueberry muffin.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Price: £30 | Buy now from Amazon

Seven years in the making and twice delayed, Red Dead Redemption 2 didn’t have the smoothest of development journeys. But it’s here now, and it was damn well worth waiting for. On the weekend following release day, the Expert Reviews team collectively played an estimated 60 hours – and barely scratched the surface. Rockstar has made a huge yet incredibly detailed game that builds on everything we loved from the first Red Dead back in 2010.

There are so many missions, activities and locations that you won’t know where to start; luckily, this is the kind of game where you can’t go wrong. Whether robbing a steam train with a gang of outlaws or having a morning coffee and shave at the campsite, you’ll be totally immersed in Red Dead 2’s sprawling Wild West world.

Jurassic World Evolution

Price: £30 | Buy now from Amazon

Could this be the best video game movie tie-in of the year? You’re Dern right it could be! As in Laura Dern, from the first and third Jurassic Park films. *cough* Produced by Frontier Developments, the same team who brought us the classic Rollercoaster Tycoon franchise, Jurassic World Evolution is a hyper-addictive theme park simulation strategy game – with dinosaurs in it. And Jeff Goldblum’s voice.

Death Road to Canada

Price: £12 | Buy now from Microsoft

This crazy zombie-slaying adventure is one of the best indie game we’ve played on this list, and for couch co-op it’s unbeatable; gamers won’t have had this much fun with an arcade-style title since Cuphead last year. Death Road to Canada sees players control a team of post-apocalyptic survivors (including cats, dogs, and pigs) to slay an endless horde of randomly generated zombies (the slow, proper ones) in mad-cap fashion.

Forza Horizon 4

Price: £40 | Buy now from Amazon

Forza Horizon 4 is not the most accurate racing sim out there – far, far from it. It might be the most fun and best-looking, however. The Horizon series is a totally different beast to the Forza Motorsport series, ditching boring old realism in favour of flashy arcade-style gameplay. It’s a love letter to the likes of Need for Speed and Burnout Paradise, and it looks phenomenal, especially in 4K HDR on the Xbox One X. Although dedicated track-heads may not approve of Horizon 4’s loose interpretation of the laws of physics, it should keep casual gamers entertained for hours as they drive around the Great British countryside. And if there is one game to show off the graphical potential of the Xbox One X, this is it.

Far Cry 5

Price: £18 | Buy now from Amazon

Far Cry 5 is the latest action-adventure shoot-em-up in Ubisoft’s increasingly explosive open-world series. It’s moved so far away from its survival guerilla warfare origins as to be practically unrecognisable, especially in terms of storytelling, but the core gameplay mechanics are there, and it’s no less fun for having evolved over time.

This time around, players take control of a Sheriff in the heart of hillbilly Montana, where a crazed cult has taken over and is attempting to initiate a religious war.

Forza Motorsport 7

Price: £30 | Buy now from Game

Turn10’s Forza Motorsport 7 is still one of the best games on Microsoft’s family of Xbox consoles – and one of our all-time favourite racers. It looks utterly gorgeous on the One and One S, but if you’re lucky enough to own an Xbox One X, you’re in for a real treat. With HDR and 4K textures, Forza Motorsport 7 is a must, plays like a dream, and is one of the best sim-racing games of this generation. Vroom Vroom!

Monster Hunter: World

Price: £25 | Buy now from Game

Jurassic Park meets Avatar in this epic action-adventure RPG from Capcom, the first in the Monster Hunter games series to receive the critical acclaim it deserves. Wielding improbably sized swords and magical powers, players traverse a richly detailed world that’s positively teeming with life; most of it out to kill you.

You can journey alone, or the deadly dinosaur monsters in multiplayer. Either way, Monster Hunter: World offers up an incredibly immersive, colourful, and challenging adventure.
