Veho Muvi HD NPNG Special Edition review
Good value, but the mount isn’t up to serious action-packed recording
Specifications
1/2.5in CMOS sensor, 800×480 (60fps), 720p (30fps), 1080p (30fps), 0.0x zoom, 81g
The Veho Muvi HD NPNG Special Edition (NPNG stands for No Proof, No Glory, just so you know) comes with a box chock-full of accessories. There’s a waterproof case, good for 60 minutes at 60 metres down, three different sticky mounts for various applications, which can all pivot to various angles, a spring-loaded clip mount and a useful strap. If all this isn’t enough, you can also use the standard tripod mount to screw the Muvi on to a third-party accessory.
The waterproof case is just one of many accessories supplied with this Special Edition
There’s also a remote control, which comes with its own clip mount to make it easy to attach to your clothing, and an 8GB microSD card is included. Considering how much many other manufacturers charge for action camera accessories, having all this included with the Muvi makes it a bit of a bargain.
The Muvi doesn’t have Wi-Fi or app support, but it is unusual among action cams in having a live view on its colour display, meaning you can frame videos and photos properly while using the Muvi handheld instead of mounted. The screen also makes it easy to change the camcorder’s settings, such as changing video or photo resolution or adjusting the interval for time lapse photos. The camcorder supports video at 720p and 1080p at 30fps, but can only do 60fps video at a low 800×480 resolution. You can set it to take time lapse photos at intervals of 2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60 seconds.
No app support, but you can change settings on the built-in screen
When the camcorder was static, video quality was reasonable. There’s significantly more noise than in the expensive GoPro Hero3’s footage, but more detail and accurate colours than other action cams at the cheaper end of the spectrum, such as the Liquid Image Ego.
Some noise in static video, but a good amount of detail –

We strapped the camcorder to an RC car for high-speed testing
However, during our off-road action test, which we ran using an HPI Racing Bullet MT remote-controlled truck, the Muvi was undone by its mount. The camera’s screw mount is on its base, and this means the camera stands tall on a hinged mount, rather than being fixed horizontally like cameras such as the Contour Roam2 or Drift HD Ghost. The tall centre of gravity led to some serious wobble as our car careered down a wooded track, leading to footage with vertical shake and shimmering.
Wobble in the mount led to shimmery video – best viewed full-screen at 1080p
Thanks to its included remote control and built-in display, the Veho Muvi HD is easier to use than many action camcorders we’ve seen. This Special Edition bundle is also good value, thanks to the sheer number of included accessories. Video quality isn’t up there with high-end action cameras, but is certainly acceptable. The only problem is the way the camcorder is mounted, which leaves to top-heavy wobble. It’s a fine and good-value action cam, but those who want some steady extreme video should look for a camcorder with a more rigid mount, such as the Contour Roam2.
