Small and mighty; these are our preferred Raumfeld speakers

These speakers are part of Teufel’s multi-room audio system. Other products in the range include the Teufel Raumfeld 3CSM and Teufel Raumfeld Connector, plus the Teufel Raumfeld Speaker M.

Like its bigger brother, the Raumfeld Speaker S has a conservative design that doesn’t exactly stand out in a room, even in the white finish seen here. It retains the aluminium finish on its buttons, however, which feel just as sturdy here as they do on the Speaker M.

It also has the same ports on the rear of the left satellite: an Ethernet port (if you prefer to go the wired route rather than wireless), a USB port for connecting a memory stick or external hard disk, and an analogue RCA auxiliary input. The Wi-Fi antenna is also present, but we’d have preferred an integrated aerial rather than one that sticks out of the back of the speaker.

The integrated amplifier is rated at 50W RMS, and powers the 19mm tweeter and 101mm woofer in each speaker. This is an ample amount for a small room such as a bedroom or study, and is still powerful enough for a medium-sized living room.

Teufel Raumfeld Speaker S

There was a little more room to manoeuvre in terms of volume with the S than there was with the M. We could push the volume past 65% before it became uncomfortable to listen to in close proximity. Quality was still very high, with a great balance between the mid-range and high-end. There was understandably less bass, but still more than enough for us to feel the vibration from our heavier test tracks. Build quality is at the same level as the M, so there was no sign of creaking or distortion from shoddy materials.

The Speaker S is the ideal size for wall-mounting or hiding out of plain sight, but again, the Sonos alternative is cheaper, although less so than the Speaker M. As a stereo pair, the Speaker S is much better value and makes the ideal addition to a variety of room sizes. If you’re going the Raumfeld route, these are the speakers to buy.
