Tritton AX 720 review

Extensive compatibility is all well and good, but sound quality is what truly makes or breaks any headset. Thankfully, the AX performed admirably when connected to a games console; virtual surround sound decoded by the amplifier helped us pick out opponents with far greater accuracy than through a set of TV stereo speakers. Explosions and gunshots were suitably powerful, but unlike many gaming headsets, bass notes weren’t the dominant frequencies. Both mid-range and high-end notes were clearly audible and both music and films sounded crisp and warm.

Used as a PC headset, you miss out on the Dolby Digital features provided by the amplifier, but sound quality stays just as clear. All our test tracks sounded warm and well-rounded; in busier tracks the mid-range became slightly muddied, but overall sound quality was excellent. Voice quality was also very clear, so our teammates had no trouble understanding us in the heat of battle, across all three platforms.

At roughly £110, the AX 720 is among the more expensive stereo headsets; if you play games exclusively on the PC, there are cheaper alternatives that still offer great audio quality. However, console gamers don’t have quite such an extensive choice, which makes this a much more interesting product. If you want to get the drop on your opponents, this can give you a serious boost over standard stereo.
