Tesco Hudl tablet specifications leaked ahead of launch

Tesco appears to be preparing a decidedly mid-range Android tablet to complete with the likes of Amazon and Google, if leaked specifications prove accurate

Tesco is gearing up to launch its HUDL Android tablet next week, but if a set of leaked specifications prove accurate you may not want to hold your breath for something to challenge the likes of Google’s Nexus 7.

Our sister site PC Pro received a convincing set of specifications this morning from a source within Tesco, suggesting the tablet will have a 7in, 1,280×720 IPS display. That would put it behind the first generation Nexus 7 in terms of resolution.

Power will come from an unspecified 1.6GHz quad-core processor, paired with 1GB of RAM and a quad-core GPU. 16GB of storage is expected, along with a MicroSD card slot for adding extra capacity later.

The tablet should come with two cameras; a 2-megapixel front webcam and a 3-megapixel camera on the back for photos and video. GPS, Bluetooth and the usual selection of sensors and radios including a gyroscope and accelerometer are also expected.

Unlike Amazon’s Kindle Fire, Tesco is apparently opting for the stock version of Google’s Android operating system, rather than use a custom skin. It will be bundling BlinkBox film, music and book apps, along with Clubcard TV access – Tesco’s own on-demand TV service which is free to members of its loyalty card scheme.

We still don’t know an official name for the tablet, which is believed to be the first in a range to come under the HUDL brand, or a price. However, Tesco is apparently pitching it against the Kindle Fire, which starts from £99.

We’ll know more when Tesco officially reveals the tablet next week.
