Virgin Media boosting internet speeds for all customers – up to 152Mbit/s

Virgin Media

Speeds going up across the board over the next 12 months

Virgin Media is today boosting the speeds of its fibre-optic broadband services up to a whopping 152Mbit/s. Top-end subscribers were already receiving a massive 120Mbit/s, so the rise is incremental but still significant. Raises in speed right down the pecking order though will likely make a bigger impact.

Other customers will have to wait, with upgrades rolling out over the next 12 months. 30Mbit/s will be boosted to 50Mbit/s and 60Mbit/s goes up to 100Mbit/s. The service is available to around 12.5m homes in the UK.

The headline speed boost was initially announced back in November, as we reported in Download next-gen games in under an hour with 152Mbit/s Virgin Media cable. That announcement was pre-dated by one stating that PS4 and Virgin Media enter into gaming partnership, although we’ve never been given any concrete plans of how that partnership is functioning.

Virgin Media is also rolling out its new Web-Safe parental controls technology today. THis allows the account holder to block ‘age-inappropriate websites’. This will be accompanied by an interactive guide to making informed choices about content titled Switched On Families. The downside of any such system of course is that it blocks said content for everyone in the house, rather than on a device specific basis.
