802.11ac Netgear Wi-Fi router announced

Netgear 1300Mbit/s R6300 Dual Band Gigabit 802.11ac router

Netgear claims the industry's first ultra-fast 802.11ac router

The new 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard heralds a new age of ultra-fast wireless networking in which users can easily and effortlessly route large files and HD media throughout their home, with gigabit speeds being claimed by manufacturers. Understandably, hardcore media hoarders and movie buffs will be queuing round the block to purchase this technology, and Netgear’s hoping to be first to market with its 802.11ac R6300 Dual Band Gigabit Wi-Fi router.

Netgear says the R6300 has a theoretical top data transfer speed of 1300Mbit/s on the 5GHz band and 450Mbit/s on the 2.4GHz band. The real-life data transfer speeds experienced by end users are highly unlikely to be anywhere near 1300Mbit/s, but they’ll be quicker than anything we have now.

Not only does it have fast Wi-Fi speeds, the R6300 also has two USB ports to which you can connect and share USB drives and printers, and a built-in media server. It also has an app that lets you print to a connected USB or network printer from an iPhone or iPad and an app that lets you find photos, music and videos wherever they may be located on the network.

The Netgear R6300 seems ideal for media-hungry homes with multiple interconnected PCs and devices. We’re certainly looking forward to putting the R6300 through its paces to see if it’s as good as Netgear claims, so keep checking Expert Reviews for more information.
