Apple updates the Mac mini with double the storage
Apple has released a 2020 update to its Mac mini lineup
Alongside the reveal of the MacBook Air 2020, Apple today announced a refresh to its Mac mini desktop PC – doubling the storage of its base-level configuration.
The lowest price Mac mini, which will set you back £799, will now come with 256GB of storage. The £1,099 model, meanwhile, will give you 512GB of storage space.
The previous update to the Mac mini happened way back in 2018, and this year’s refresh doesn’t change anything in the way of that model’s GPU or port configurations. The 2020 Mac mini still uses an 8th-generation Intel Core i3 processor for the £799 model, and a Core i5 processor for the £1,099 model.
Both models come with 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory, Intel UHD Graphics 630, and a range of ports, including four Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C ports, two USB 3.0 Type-A ports, an HDMI port, Ethernet and even a 3.5mm headphone jack.
In 2018, our reviewer Jonathan Bray found the base-level setup to be a reasonable work machine, provided you weren’t planning to do too much in the way of 4K video editing:
“The Core i3-based Mac mini is perfectly capable of performing most things a reasonably demanding desktop PC user is likely to ask of it. It’ll take heavy Photoshop editing in its stride and even a modicum of video editing – with the right software, the Mac mini’s T2 co-processor is capable of dramatically accelerating HEVC video encoding. That said, this lowest-spec model will still likely start to struggle if you throw complex 4K video-editing projects at it.”
As its name suggests, the Mac mini does make up for what it lacks in power with its portable size. The boost to storage could make it even more compelling for media related tasks. It’s available to buy from Apple today.
