Microsoft’s mixed-reality HoloLens 2 gets official September release date
The news comes after an announcement at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference
We’ve been semi-aware of the HoloLens 2’s existence for some time now. Back in February, Microsoft unveiled the new device at the Mobile World Congress, but we weren’t given any indication of a release date.
When the release date finally rolls around, the UK will be one of the first countries to get the device, alongside the US, Japan, China, Germany, Canada, Ireland, France, Australia and New Zealand. The device is available to preorder now.
Microsoft HoloLens 2 release date
Microsoft’s executive vice president Harry Shum announced that the second generation, mixed-reality device will finally be released sometime this September with a $3,500 price tag. The big reveal came during a speech at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, which is currently taking place in Shanghai until 31 August.
What is the Microsoft HoloLens?
HoloLens is Microsoft’s mixed-reality headset that allows users to see, hear and interact with holograms that have been cast over the natural environment. It uses semi-transparent, holographic lenses built into the device and doesn’t need to be connected to a PC to run.
It’s not too dissimilar from what the Google Glass was, but is very much different from virtual-reality headsets such as the Oculus Rift S, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR. The HoloLens has been specifically designed for business use and there’s no word if or when Microsoft will be designing a version for consumer use.
What’s new with HoloLens 2?
The updated HoloLens has been redesigned for maximum comfort, with a lighter design and better-fitting headset. The device also promises to have smarter AI elements and an improved display with wider viewing angles, something it had been criticised for previously.
