Sony Reader store killed, Sony urges people to download ebooks immediately
Sony is closing its Reader store and moving all customers to Kobo, with some books unable to make the transfer
Anyone with a Sony e-reader or Sony Reader app on their Xperia phone or tablet is being urged to download all their books before Sony closes the service down on 16 June.
Sony has already announced the closure of the Reader Store in the US and it is now getting the chop in the UK, Germany, Austria and Australia.
The Sony Reader Store will close forever on 16 June, with all customers being moved over to rival service Kobo. Sony said that it would be transferring purchased ebooks, but said that some titles might not be available from Kobo.
“We suggest that you download your eBooks from Reader Store prior to 16th June 2014,” Sony explained.
“In some cases, the eBook you have previously purchased may not be available at Kobo and will not be included in the transfer. We also recommend that you use up any remaining credit and vouchers you may have in your account.”
All Sony e-reader customers will be sent an email by Kobo in June with a link to let them transfer their existing purchases. Anyone who doesn’t want to have their account moved to Kobo can opt out by filling in the form here. If people chose to opt out they will no longer be able access any ebooks they haven’t previously downloaded or be moved to a new Kobo account.
Sony confirmed that all highlights and mark-ups will be erased as part of the transfer to Kobo, while wishlists will also be deleted. Account credit, gift cards and voucher codes will also be invalid after 16 June.
An update will be available for all Sony PRS-T1, PRS-T2, and PRS-T3 e-readers to allow them to purchase and download books from the Kobo Store.
