Refreshed Amazon Kindle Fire range spotted early in leaked images

Amazon may be gearing up to replace the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD tablets, if a new set of leaked images prove accurate.

The latest image comes from the @evleaks twitter account, which has a proven track record when it comes to leaked images and early press shots of upcoming hardware. The image, described as “another upcoming Kindle”, shows the front of a tablet which lacks a webcam – suggesting it will be a budget model rather than a range topping Fire HD.

They follow an initial set of photos revealed by BGR, which show the new Kindle Fire HD model with a redesigned exterior that replaces the curved back of the original with more angular shapes and a new button layout. The stereo speakers also appear to have moved from the bottom to the top rear of the device.

BGR’s images only show the 7in version, but the site says the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 replacement will receive a similar makeover.

The same source that revealed the images also gave an indication towards specifications. The 7in Fire HD will apparently use a 1,920×1,080 resolution display, powered by a quad-core Qualcom Snapdragon 800 chipset and 2GB of RAM. The 8.9in model should follow a similar route, except exchange the Full HD panel for a 2,650×1,600 model.

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean will most likely be the underlying operating system, although Amazon’s own interface will run on top. 16, 32 and 64GB models should be available, in Wi-Fi only or 3G variants. Both models should be lighter than the current generation.

Amazon has yet to officially confirm the leaks, or reveal further information regarding its Kindle range, but seeing as it has just reduced the price of its cheapest Kindle Fire to £99, so a replacement in the near future looks highly likely.
