As the premier international competition of men’s tennis, the Davis Cup Finals are a momentous occasion at the end of the tennis calendar. Following the group stage of the tournament in September, the final eight nations will battle it out for the world title from 22 November, with the final taking place on 27 November.

What is the Davis Cup?

Unlike the majority of other tennis competitions, the Davis Cup isn’t between individuals but teams. These teams are set by nationality, with the Davis Cup often billed as tennis’ equivalent to football’s FIFA World Cup since it is a knock-out style tournament run by the International Tennis Federation, and is a rare opportunity for tennis players who usually represent themselves to don their national colours and enjoy team camaraderie.

How does the Davis Cup work?

While the Davis Cup Finals in November are a knockout competition, the Davis Cup as a whole is spread over the course of a calendar year. Original qualifying matches were held in March to determine who would make the group stage of the competition.

The following group stage fixtures – between 16 countries (12 winners from the qualifying rounds, the two finalists from last year’s competition and two additional wild card picks) – took place in September across the four cities of Bologna, Glasgow, Hamburg and Valencia to determine who would make it to the finals in Malaga. Teams were split into four groups of four where the top two teams would qualify and the results can be seen below with each nation’s respective match wins (W) and losses (L). In instances where teams had level victory-to-loss ratios, the aggregate number of individual games won and lost determined who was placed higher. All fixtures were played as a best of three, with two singles and one doubles match.
