SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.0 128GB flash drive review
This USB3 flash drive has the speed to match its capacity
The Extreme Pro USB3 128GB is SanDisk’s top-end USB3 flash drive, and it’s designed for users who require an ultra-portable means of transferring extremely large files. The drive has a claimed read speed of 260MB/s and a write speed of 240MB/s. Both speeds are fast, and its high capacity adds considerable appeal.
The device has a metal and plastic body with a simple mechanism to slide the USB connector in and out. This mechanism works well, but the Extreme Pro doesn’t feel particularly rugged. We’d expect a device at this price to look and feel a bit tougher.
You get a free one year subscription to RescuePRO Deluxe recovery software with the Extreme Pro USB 3.0 128GB, though, which would normally cost £45. The drive also comes with SanDisk SecureAccess, which allows you to password protect files on your drive using software installed on the drive itself.
Of course, the most important aspect of this product is its performance, and the Extreme Pro performs exceptionally well. In our large file writing test the drive produced an average transfer speed of 132.2MB/s. When reading large files, the drive produced an average speed of 178.6MB/s. In our more challenging small file tests, the drive produced write speeds of 19.9MB/s and read speeds of 48.7MB/s.
In short, this is both the highest capacity and fastest USB flash drive we’ve ever used. While the expense is significant and it isn’t as rugged as we’d like, those seeking top-end performance should look no further than the SanDisk Extreme Pro USB 3.0 128GB.
