Freecom Toughdrive 256GB review
A fast but expensive USB3 SSD
Included on the SSD is an installer for the Nero BackItUp program. Although the wizard-style interface is a little fussy, it’s a competent program that backs up your files according to a schedule and will only back up those files that have changed since the last backup. This means the program will save time when it performs subsequent backups.
The Freecom Toughdrive isn’t bad, but it is overpriced at £1.05 per gigabyte, especially when you consider its rather dated casing. If you’re very clumsy, you like its rubbery silicone casing or you want the reassurance of a single warranty, the Toughdrive could be the fast portable storage for you. However, you can save over £100 by buying the 250GB version of the Samsung 840 Evo and fitting it inside a Startech USB3 2.5in enclosure for a total cost of around £152. At an effective price per gigabyte of 60p, it’s far better value compared to the Toughdrive.
