Corel PaintShop Pro X5 Ultimate review
Lots of great features and just as many irritating niggles – ultimately, the cons outweigh the pros
Various other parts of PaintShop Pro remain as awkward as ever. Raw files can’t be rotated in Manage mode, and there are no options to filter the library by photo metadata. There are two entirely independent raw processing engines for the Adjust and Edit tabs, and quality of both trails behind the competition.
With poor quality noise reduction, limited tone controls and painfully slow preview refreshes, raw processing isn’t up to much
Despite appearances, edits made in the Adjust tab are destructive, so you can’t go back and tweak settings later. The layer-based editing tools are just as capable as Photoshop Elements’ but we find them much less elegant to use.
With its wealth of powerful features, PaintShop Pro is still a decent choice for demanding users who have the patience to live with its foibles. However, substandard raw processing is something they shouldn’t have to put up with. Once again, Photoshop Elements comes out on top.
