Samsung Galaxy Fold: New article suggests the phone’s screen malfunctions have finally been fixed
Samsung have completed redesigns of the handset after malfunctions led to numerous delays
It’s certainly later than expected, but the Samsung Galaxy Fold may finally be getting a release in the next few months.
After the foldable phone was initially delayed earlier in the year due to issues with screen malfunctions and hardware faults, rumours seem to suggest that Samsung is getting ready to unveil the new and improved Galaxy Fold.
Originally planned for release in April 2019, Samsung have surely been feeling the pressure to fix their foldable phone and beat their competitors, like the Huawei Mate X, to the market.
With just a few months left before the Galaxy Fold will supposedly be in the hands of the public, now’s the perfect time to refresh yourself on what you need to know about Samsung’s upcoming phone. To find out more, all you have to do is read on.
Samsung Galaxy Fold: Everything you need to know
Samsung Galaxy Fold specs: What’s powering the new phone?
- Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
- RAM: 12GB
- Storage: 512GB
- Front camera: 10MP, f/2.2
- Internal camera: Dual 10MP, f/2.2 + 8MP, f/1.9 depth sensing
- Rear camera: Triple 16MP, ultra-wide f/2.2 + 12MP wide-angle, f/1.5-f/2.3 + 12MP 2x telephoto with optical zoom
- Front display: 4.6in, 21:9, HD+ Super AMOLED
- Internal display: 7.3in, 14:10, Dynamic AMOLED
- Battery: 4,380mAh
- Price: $1,980
The highlight here is that 7.3in internal screen, which allows you to run three apps at once on a tablet-esque display. That screen also folds neatly in on itself, allowing you to use the Fold as though it were a traditional smartphone. Or at least, sort of: the front display is only 4.6in, with a 12:9 ratio, and flanked by two enormous bezels. Unfolded, the screen has a QXGA+ resolution, with a separate 4.6-inch HD+ display used in folded mode.
The Fold will also have a USB Type-C charge port and side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It will use a nano SIM slot, but won’t support storage expansion via MicroSD.
Samsung Galaxy Fold release date: When will you be able to buy one?
Having experienced numerous delays, the Samsung Galaxy Fold could at last be seeing a release in the near future. After being delayed, the phone apparently underwent a two-month redesign, which has now been completed, and is now entering the final stages of production. This is according to a recent Bloomberg article, claiming to have spoken with people who are familiar with the recent developments.

That doesn’t mean the phone will be getting an immediate release, however. The report goes on to say the Samsung Galaxy Fold will not be unveiled before or during the “Unpack” event for the Note 10 on 7 Aug.
What this likely means is that we won’t see an announcement for the Galaxy Fold until after the “Unpack” event. This is further supported by Bloomberg’s sources, who also claim Samsung are still figuring out a launch date.
Samsung Galaxy Fold release date: What changes were made in the redesign?
If the Bloomberg article is accurate, one of the most noticeable changes is the protective film now being stretched to wrap around the entire screen. Reaching the outer bezels, the film should be now be more difficult to peel off by hand.
Another development is the redesign of the phone’s hinge, which will now push upward more slightly when opened, helping to stretch the protective film further when in use.
Bloomberg’s sources say the tension this stretching will create makes the film feel like a more integral part of the foldable phone, rather than a removable accessory.
