Thermaltake WingRS 301 review

Thermaltake’s WingRS 301 is one of the cheapest cases around. Instead of a flat top, it has a plastic carrying handle to allow gamers to take their PC more easily to events.

If your plan to use the handle, you’ll welcome the case’s light weight. For everyone else, build quality is a bit too flimsy. Not all the internal edges are as smooth as we’d like, but we were pleased to find tool-free clips to secure our 3 1/2in and 5 1/4in drives. These also feel a bit lightweight, so you might want to add an extra screw on the other side of the bays for peace of mind, but they work well enough.

There are four external 5 1/4in bays, and six 3 1/2in bays. Four of the latter come with mounting clips for standard hard disks. The other two, only one of which corresponds with an external blanking plate on the fascia, have a different mounting clip that wouldn’t fit our standard drives.

Long graphics cards occluded the hard disks in some positions, but it’s possible to work around this if you fit disks in the lower bays. The case comes with one 120mm rear fan, with space at the front to mount another of the same size. A heat duct in the side panel is likely to block larger CPU coolers, but can be removed and replaced with a fan. As you’d expect from a cheap case, there’s no sound damping or dust protection.

Aside from its price, there’s no compelling reason to buy this case unless you really need the handle. Akasa’s Zen is better made and more spacious.
