Viewsonic VSD 220 Smart Display review
An ambitious idea, but this Android-powered all-in-one PC fails to make an impression
Specifications
1GHz , 1GB RAM, 21.5in 1,920×1,080 display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
Our image quality tests were also relatively disappointing, as our colour calibrator revealed it was only displaying 94.1% of the sRGB colour gamut straight out of the box. TN panels generally have weaker colour accuracy than more expensive IPS screens, but we had hoped for a little more as we’ve seen other TN panels like the award-winning AOC 2752Vq reach up to 98.1%. Sadly, a lack of individual display controls means there’s no way to calibrate this score should you want to try and improve it.
Its contrast levels were excellent, and our scene of a night-lit harbour was bright and highly detailed, despite reflections. Blues, greens and reds were also vibrant, although we did notice the LED backlight bleeding through at the bottom of the screen on each image.
Apart from its Micro HDMI and MicroSD ports, the VSD220 has a limited range of connectivity options, including a micro USB port, two full-size USB2 ports and a headphone jack on the side of the display. These extra ports will be a welcome addition if you’re using it as a monitor for your PC, as you’ll be able to attach peripherals to the VSD220 instead of reaching behind your PC.
Ultimately, though, the ViewSonic VSD220 just doesn’t succeed as an all-in-one PC, a monitor, or a tablet. It’s too expensive for a monitor and too slow to be a viable alternative to an all-in-one Windows-based PC, even at its relatively low price. We applaud ViewSonic’s ambitious idea of bringing Android to the all-in-one market, but stick with a traditional tablet for now.
