Save £550 on Apple’s 5K 27in iMac
It may have been surpassed by the 2019 model, but the 2017 iMac still packs a punch
If you’re in the market for a budget all-in-one desktop computer, Apple’s 27in iMac probably isn’t the best place to start, and the reason why is right there in the name: it’s Apple, and it’s 27 inches.
But it is a wonderful piece of hardware, combining sleek design with plenty of power and a big, impressive 5K screen. And now you can own the 2017 model for £550 less, as it’s ‘reduced to clear’ at John Lewis.
That means you’re getting the 27in iMac with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, a 1TB Fusion hard drive and a Radeon Pro 570 graphics for £1,199. John Lewis says this is a saving of £250, but that was on its sale price: two years back, this would have cost £1,749.
Okay, there’s a reason it’s reduced to clear: Apple has a 2019 version of the iMac, which is obviously significantly better. But, unsurprisingly, it’ll set you back at least £1,749, rising to £4,904 if you get all the bells and whistles.
And for most people, the 2017 model will prove a solid workhorse. “On its own, a 5K monitor will set you back around £680 for the Iiyama ProLite XB2779QQS,” Chris wrote in his review at the time. This puts the 5K iMac in a league of its own, offering a stunning display and a computer all in one stylish metal body.
“When you look at it like that, the 27-inch iMac with 5K Retina Display isn’t just amazing value, it’s a complete steal. Given the quality of the display, the speed of the internals, the build quality and the amazing wireless peripherals, there’s nothing out there that can touch this computer: it’s the ultimate all-in-one for professionals and for those that want the best, winning it a Best Buy award.”
It may not be top of the line any more, but at this price, it’s certainly worth considering.
