7in Samsung tablet gets certified in China, could arrive as Galaxy Mega 7
Samsung could be working on a tablet/smartphone hybrid called the Galaxy Mega 7, which would replace the Mega 6.3 as the biggest handset in the company's line-up
Samsung is reportedly working on a new 7in Android device, which could potentially succeed the oversized Galaxy Mega 6.3 phablet as the company’s largest handset to date by increasing the already large screen to an even bigger 7 inches – although a leaked product name also suggests it could be a tablet rather than a smartphone.
According to Sammobile, the 7in SM-T2558 has received certification by the Chinese regulatory authority TENAA. The leaked images show a device that looks much more like a Galaxy smartphone than one of the recently-announced Galaxy Tab 4 tablets or the more business-oriented Galaxy Tab Pro models, although the T designation in the codename suggests it will primarily be designed as a tablet rather than a phone.
Despite that fact, it appears to have both TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA wireless connectivity, potentially for making calls on China’s 3G and 4G networks. Internally, the device appears to have a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, most likely a Snapdragon 400 rather than one of Samsung’s Exynos processors, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and microSD card slot expansion.
The 7in screen will have a 1,280×720 resolution and the rear camera will use an 8-megapixel sensor, rather than the top-end 16-megapixel ISOCELL sensor found in the Galaxy S5, suggesting the SM-T2558 will be a mid-range device.
It will also run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, rather than the latest 4.4 KitKat, and has the older physical Menu key, rather than a Recent Apps key found on newer Samsung handsets and tablets.
Samsung has yet to confirm or deny the rumours, and there’s no indication whether the handset will eventually make its way out of China and into other territories, so we’ll just have to wait for an official announcement for more information.
