Motorola Moto X UK launch date announced, but no Moto Maker yet

Motorola is finally bringing its flagship Moto X smartphone to the UK on the 1st of February, but it will cost an eye-watering £380 SIM-free

Motorola has finally announced that it will be bringing its flagship Moto X smartphone to the UK, more than four months after it first launched in the US.

Confirming earlier rumours that the handset was headed to the UK, Motorola revealed all at a London event this morning. From the 1st of February, us brits won’t be forced to compromise with the mid-range (but admittedly fantastic value) Moto G – we’ll be able to pick up a Moto X from all major networks and retailers.

However, the 4.7in, 720p handset will set you back an eye-watering £380 SIM-free. That’s a lot, especially considering you can buy a 16GB Nexus 5 straight from Google for £80 less. Contract prices are expected to start from £25 a month on O2, although other networks have yet to reveal their price plans.

It also looks like Moto Maker, the online customisation portal that lets prospective customers choose the colour, pattern and finish of the Moto X, won’t be crossing the Atlantic with the handset itself.

As it stands, the Moto X will ship with the latest 4.4 KitKat edition of Android, always on voice recognition courtesy of Motorola’s proprietary X8 Mobile Computing System, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 10-megapixel camera and all-day battery life.

We’ll be bringing you some hands-on first impressions of the UK-bound handset, KitKat update and all, later today, so be sure to check back if you’re thinking of picking one up on the 1st of February.
