Microsoft has revealed an iOS version of its Office productivity suite. Following months of rumours Office Mobile for Office 365 Subscribers is now available to download. However, it has changed significantly from the free document viewer many had been expecting.
The app will let you view Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents, but it can only create new Word and Excel files. Access to Microsoft’s Skydrive cloud storage servers is built-in, letting you download files for viewing or editing when on the move, with changes synced automatically when connected to Wi-Fi.
Office Mobile is currently only available for iPhone, with no iPad edition currently in the works. Microsoft expects tablet owners to use the Office web apps instead. However, it’s not open to everyone – despite being a free app, you’ll need to log in with a paid Office 365 subscription in order to view and edit documents. In order to qualify you need to have Office 365 Small Business Premium, which costs £8.40 per user per month.
Office Mobile for Office 365 Subscribers is available to download now from the iTunes store for US users, with international availability expected in the coming days.
