O2 TU Go launched – make and receive calls via Wi-Fi on multiple devices

O2 is taking mobile phone services to the next-generation, not with 4G (though that will be coming shortly), but with VoIP software that lets you make and receive calls on a wide variety of devices. The TU Go service is available now for monthly contract customers – there’s apps for iOS, Android and Windows – you simply install it and link it to your O2 phone number.

Once done, any of your devices can be used to answer an incoming call or read and reply to text messages – as long as they have a Wi-Fi connection. This also means you can make and receive calls on your phone anywhere where you have Wi-Fi, even if the signal is poor. That even includes when you’re overseas, making calls home from trips abroad far cheaper. On tablets and other 3G-enabled devices, you can choose if you want to make your call via mobile internet or an available Wi-Fi network.

Any calls or texts you make will come out of your usual monthly allowance, or your standard rate once that’s been used up. And whatever device you make them from, they are routed through the O2 network and will appear to come from your usual phone number – so no confused relatives receiving calls from odd numbers.

When using the app, you’ll have access to the local address book on that device; plus there’s a synced list between devices that shows all your call history and conversations, so you can jump back into a stream of text messages from any device.

It’s a great idea, though one that’s well overdue, and has numerous time-saving features for those who use multiple devices on a daily basis (you can attach up to five devices to a single number). We’re looking forward to giving it a full test in the near future.
