Virgin Media bringing unlimited data to pay-as-you-go tariffs
Unlimited data from just £10 a month to rival smartphones on contract
Virgin Media has announced two new Pay-As-You-Go tariffs that will appeal to data-hungry smartphone owners – one with unlimited data and texts and the other with unlimited landline calls – from just £10 a month.
The new Big Data and Texts tariff starts at £10, providing unlimited data and 300 texts. For £5 more, customers will get unlimited texts as well. The Big Talk tariff earns unlimited calls to any landline plus 120 anytime mobile minutes for £10 a month, with an extra £5 adding unlimited texts. Unlike some network providers, Virgin’s PAYG top-up amounts count as credit which can be applied to other services that fall outside the included monthly rewards.
Virgin claims it has seen a 100% increase in the amount of data traffic used by its PAYG customers in the past year, and that number is expected to increase as smartphones get more powerful. Smartphone owners now make up roughly 40% of Virgin’s PAYG network, double last year’s amount.
“Unlimited data is a must to get the most out of the amazing smartphones available today. People want to be connected wherever they are so we’ve introduced unlimited data without the ties of a contract.” Jamie Heywood, Virgin’s director of mobile, said of the announcement. “Having introduced unbeatable pay-monthly tariffs earlier this year, we’re now introducing incredible value pay-as-you-go tariffs too which makes Virgin Media the unbeatable choice for unlimited data, whether you’re willing to sign up to a new contract or not.”
