Samsung Galaxy S II Ice Cream Sandwich update trickles in for Vodafone users

Samsung Galaxy S II owners on the Vodafone network will be the last to get the latest version of Android, thanks to a last minute change that Vodafone blamed on Samsung. Vodafone users with the Kies desktop synchronisation software will be able to update today, whereas those who don’t use Kies will have to wait until Tuesday next week (17th April).

Samsung announced the update on the 12th March for users in Poland, Hungary, Sweden and Korea, with other European countries to follow in short order. Owners of unlocked Galaxy S IIs were the first to be able to update, but Three was the first network to roll the update out to its users, with O2 following soon after on the 27th March. Networks tend to take longer with software updates because they also have to update the additional software they bundle with the phone, such as links to network-specific services.

Vodafone users were promised an update for the 12th, but Vodafone later blamed the latest delay on Samsung. A statement from the company read: “Unfortunately Samsung has told us this morning that they are unable to make the update available to you as planned… I know a lot of you, like us, will be disappointed at this last minute change of plan and we continue to challenge Samsung to make this available to you as quickly as possible.”

It’s not clear why Vodafone’s update took so much longer than its rivals’, or how it can blame Samsung for a late roll-out when the manufacturer released its initial update a month ago.
