Vodafone network temporarily wiped out after break-in

Vodafone

Customers have lost voice and data connections as a result of break-in at Vodafone.

A break-in at a Vodafone exchange centre in Basingstoke has resulted in the loss of service for numerous customers of the network.

A spokesperson said: “We had a break in last night at one of our technical facilities which resulted in damage done to some of our equipment. We are working quickly to restore these and will be back to normal as soon as we can.”

We noticed the problem, first thing this morning when our Vodafone mobiles couldn’t access the network – leaving us without voice, text or data on our daily commute. At first we thought it was our handset, but the HTC Legend wasn’t to blame. We have service now, but it has been intermittent for some hours.

Posting on the Vodafone forum the phone company has provided full details of the network outage, saying that service loss was mostly “confined to parts of the M4 corridor and some areas either side”.

The company was also quick to hit back at claims that millions of customers suffered outages, saying that “several hundred thousand customers may have been affected”.

Voice services should be back up and running for all customers now. In light of the break-in Vodafone is reviewing its security protocols to ensure that this kind of outage doesn’t happen again.

“All our sites are protected by high level security systems – we’re reviewing these with the police in the light of last night’s break in,” said the company.
