Huawei Mate 30 finally gets a UK release date: Preorders are open now and come with a FREE Huawei Watch and Freebuds

The 6.53-inch Huawei Mate 30 Pro will be available online and in stores from 20 February

After months of speculation, Huawei has confirmed it is bringing the Mate 30 to the UK and the handset will go on sale later this month.

As part of an exclusive deal with Carphone Warehouse, the 6.53-inch Huawei Mate 30 Pro will be available online and in stores from 20 February and preorders for the device are now open.

Prices start at £899 and only the silver handset is currently available. Customers who buy a Mate 30 Pro will also get a black, 46mm Huawei Watch GT 2 Sport Edition and a pair of white Huawei FreeBuds 3 – while stocks last.

This will be music to the ears of Huawei fans after rumours had suggested the Chinese firm would be forsaking the European market due to ongoing trade and political tensions.

These tensions and restrictions do mean that, as expected, the Mate 30 Pro runs on EMUI 10 – an open-source version of Android 10 with a Huawei skin that doesn’t run Google apps and isn’t officially supported by Google.

Design-wise, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro builds upon the design of the Mate 20 Series and comes with a narrow notch and a so-called Horizon Display, which curves at an angle of 88 degrees.

It is the first phone to be powered by Huawei’s own mobile chipset, the Kirin 990, which features an eight-core chip built using a 7nm fabrication process. These cores are split into three groups: two are performance-based Cortex-A76 cores, running at 2.86GHz, two are mid-power cores running at 2.36GHz; and four Cortex-A55 based cores run at 1.95GHz.

In our tests, this chipset outperformed its predcessor, the Kirin 980 by roughly 16% in multi-core tasks and is around 13% faster in single-core. You can read more about the phone’s performance in our Mate 30 Pro review.

In terms of its cameras, the Mate 30 Pro uses a quad-camera setup on the read, which includes a 40MP (f/1.6) camera, a 40MP (f/1.8) ultra-wide lens, an 8MP (f/2.4) 3x telephoto camera and a ToF (Time of Flight) camera for depth-sensing duties. A 32MP (f/2.0) selfie camera sits on the front of the phone, along with another depth camera for more effective blurred background shots.

Anson Zhang, Managing Director of the UK Consumer Business Group, Huawei, said: “We are delighted to bring the Mate 30 Pro, a device which unleashes the full potential of the smartphone, to the UK. Huawei prides itself on delivering stand-out experiences for our customers – and the Mate 30 Pro is the ultimate expression of that philosophy, re-defining what is possible on a smartphone.”

Other Huawei Mate 30 Pro features include:

  • Always-On-Display (AOD) where the colour of the lock screen changes throughout the day
  • Dark Mode
  • Side-touch Interaction feature lets users customise invisible virtual keys
  • AI gesture control for hands-free use
