Samsung teases its folding Galaxy flip phone in a surprise 30-second promo during the Oscars

A rumoured Samsung flip phone has been doing the rounds for months and now the South Korean tech giant has confirmed what it looks like in a brief 30-second teaser promo.
We’re still not sure if the phone will be called the Galaxy Fold 2, Galaxy Bloom or Galaxy Z Flip but the surprise promo, broadcast during last night’s Oscars ceremony, did reveal a series of square flip phones – in both black and purple – “dancing” around each other.
The phones are shown opening and closing via a hinge in the centre, reminiscent of the original flip phones of the 1990s made famous by Motorola and its Razr.
In fact, Samsung’s flip phone looks remarkably similar to the updated model of the Razr announced last year.
This new Razr folds along the centre, like the clamshell phones of old, but rather than having a screen on the top half and a physical keyboard below, the entire phone is a touchscreen made of folding glass.
This may explain why prices are so extortionate, starting at £94 a month on contract or $1,500 if bought outright. And we’d expect to see a similar pricing structure for Samsung’s model.
The clamshell design seen in the promo makes the Galaxy Bloom/Flip different from Samsung’s beleaguered Galaxy Fold, which instead opens and closes like a book. The Galaxy Fold started at $1,980 and was launched in September, after being delayed by several months following problems with its screens.
The promo didn’t give anything away in regards internal specifications, although previous leaks have reported the handset’s display will have a resolution of 2636 x 1080, run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, come with 8GB RAM and 256GB of non-expandable storage.
The phone is expected to be officially unveiled at a Samsung Unpacked event in San Francisco tomorrow (11 February).
