The best sub-£99 phone is now £20 cheaper

The Moto E6 Plus was a great handset for £99 – at £79 it’s crazy-good

You can get a very good smartphone for under £200, but when you hit the sub-£100 price point, things can get decidedly dicey. For every Moto E6 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi 7A there’s an Alcatel 1X or a Doogee S40. “Buyer beware” is very good advice.

But the Moto E6 Plus is a very good pick at £99, and at O2 at the moment you can get it even cheaper at its current price point of £79. True, you have to buy a £10 O2 top-up card at the same time, but you’re only wedded to it for a month and then you’re free to do what you like.

That’s a very good deal, making the handset cheaper than the significantly worse Moto E6 Play, which sells for £89 but loses a lot of performance and battery life in the process.

To be clear, the E6 Plus is still a budget phone, and therefore is not without its limitations compared to handsets that spiral into the hundreds of pounds. But generally speaking, the cutbacks are well thought out and it’s perfectly pleasant to use.

“While the Moto G7 Power remains our budget pick, if you absolutely can’t spend more than £100 then it’s hard to find too much fault with the Moto E6 Plus,” I wrote when I reviewed it last year. “It’s good looking, long-lasting and performs well enough for the price. The camera is solid, and the ability to replace the battery yourself is something that I’m very happy to see the return of.

“Should you spend more if you can afford to? Absolutely. But if you can’t, the Moto E6 Plus won’t let you down.”

In short, at £80 it’s an absolute steal and well worth the price of admission. But if you can stretch a little higher, consider the Motorola One Macro, which is currently £110 at EE.
