The Moto G8 Plus now insanely cheap in the January sales
The Motorola bargain is even better value now
For the majority of the last decade, the Motorola Moto G range was the last word in budget handsets, and the Moto G8 Plus suggests that’s going to be the case going into the 2020s too.
I gave the Moto G8 Plus a solid four-star rating when I reviewed it late last year, and the only reason it didn’t make the full five was thanks to the Redmi Note 7 undercutting it. Now Amazon has seen fit to cut the price of the Moto, it’s a much easier recommendation. The e-commerce giant is selling the handset for £199.99 in blue – and if you fancy it in magenta, then Carphone Warehouse has price matched its exclusive hue.
So what can you expect from the Moto G8 Plus? Well, a whole lot more than you have any right to from a £200 expenditure, that’s for sure. Performance is solid, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor running proceedings, and while it’s no match for a 2019 flagship, it’s certainly acceptable for day-to-day use and some mid-range gaming. Its battery life is also impressive, with the 4,000mAh cell lasting a massive 17 hours and 55 minutes in our standard test.
But the real highlight is the camera. The 48-megapixel, f/1.7 main lens is supported by a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and the results are excellent for a phone of this price, even in tricky low-light situations.
As I said above, the price was the main concern I had when I reviewed the Moto G8 Plus. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 was £60 cheaper, while the Pocophone F1 was around £30 more leaving it caught between two stools. “In this competitive market, sometimes good enough isn’t quite good enough,” I wrote.
But with £40 off that RRP just two months after I wrote that last full stop, the Moto G8 Plus is suddenly seriously worth your consideration if you’re looking for a solid budget buy.
