Apple confirms iPhone 11 launch date
Apple will be hosting its annual event in California this September – here’s what we’re expecting to see
Clear your schedule: Apple is launching the iPhone 11 in less than two weeks The tech giant has sent invitations to lucky journalists ahead of the event, which will take place on 10 September at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California.
The invitation (below) gives very little away. The Apple logo that sits front and centre is arguably reminiscent of the rainbow-coloured designs of yore; if you were hoping for some clue as to what the Californian firm might be rolling out this September, however, you’ll be left wanting.
Fortunately, we’ve been blessed by a remarkable number of leaks. Chief among these is of course the iPhone 11: rumours point to the existence of three handsets, not unlike the current iPhone XR, Xs and Xs Max.
Headline features include a square rear camera array that will house two to three cameras – two for the iPhone 11 and 11R, three for the 11 Pro. This new layout will support a night mode to rival the Google Pixel 3.
In addition, the new iPhone lineup will include improved speakers and better batteries all round, as well as three storage options: 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. Rumours even make mention of two-way wireless charging, allowing owners to charge their AirPods by placing them on the rear of the new handsets.
Other than the inevitable iPhone announcement, we’re also hoping to catch a glimpse of the rumoured Apple Watch Series 5. Very little is known about the new wearable, other than that there will be two models, available in ceramic or titanium in both 40 and 44mm sizes.
Then there’s the rumoured 16in MacBook Pro, the first of its ilk to offer such an enormous display. The new laptop was rumoured to arrive later this year alongside a host of other MacBooks, including minor renewals of both the 13in MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air. If the leaks are true, the supersized MacBook Pro will have a 3,072 x 1,920 LCD co-engineered by LG.
It’s also likely that Apple will unveil some sparkly new software. iOS 13 is currently in beta test phase, and macOS Catalinawas showcased at WWDC earlier this year. There’s even a dedicated iPadOS under construction: while it’s unlikely that any of these will launch at the California event, you can bank on Apple announcing a couple of release dates.
With a possible HomePod 2 and a semi-inevitable update on Apple TV Plus, there’s a veritable cascade of Apple products on the horizon. We’ll be covering the launch event as it unfolds on 10 September, so be sure to check back soon.
