Pixel 4: Google casually announces new handset

Google has teased the Pixel 4, effectively putting a cap on leaks before they even begin. The announcement came via Twitter seemingly without provocation; Google’s Twitter account posted an artsy image of the rear of the phone alongside a slightly cryptic message.

The image is tantalising in how little it gives away, but it does shed light on one crucial feature: the camera. Traditionally, Google Pixel handsets have stuck with a single lens, relying instead on technical wizardry to produce industry-leading photos. Given that Google’s teaser image clearly reveals that the Pixel 4 will pack a multi-lens rear camera, however, it’s safe to say that the tech giant is changing tack.

In addition, it appears that Google is doing away with the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The circular indent usually visible on the rear of a Pixel handset is notably absent in the teaser image, which means that you might expect to unlock your phone with an in-display or side-mounted fingerprint sensor instead. Remarkably, that controversial two-tone back panel appears to have suffered the same fate.

It’s difficult to say exactly why Google chose to make such an unexpected announcement. Last year’s Pixel 3 and 3 XL were leaked so heavily that, by the time the official unveiling event arrived, the industry knew just about everything there was to know about the new handsets. This is by no means an isolated incident, but it’s hardly a stretch to suggest that Google intends to get ahead of the inevitable leaks.
