The Huawei P20 Pro is going stupidly cheap right now
One of the best phones of 2018 is half price at Argos
As I write this, there’s a Huawei P20 Pro on my desk in front of me. I’m nearly a third of the way through its contract, for which I pay £34 per month, glossing over the £100 I paid upfront. That comes to £916 over two years. Ouch.
I preordered, to get free Bose headphones, y’see, but this offer is probably even better.
Argos is selling the P20 Pro for £399.95 – that’s just under half its RRP of £800. It’s available in both black or the lovely two-tone twilight colour. At this price it’s undercutting some of our favourite midrangers, including the OnePlus 6T, and it’s closing in on the brand new Nokia 8.1.
So what makes the P20 Pro so damned good? Well, it’s chiefly down to its triple-camera array, which includes a 40-megapixel snapper, a 20-megapixel monochrome lens and an 8-megapixel 3x telephoto lens. The pictures are genuinely magnificent, and up there with anything you can buy today – including the freshly released Mate 20 Pro, which has a very similar setup but will set you back £900.
Otherwise, it’s all solid stuff. The screen is an OLED affair, meaning perfect contrast and deep blacks, and the 4,000mAh battery ensures that this is a phone that will just keep on going. It uses Huawei’s own Kirin 970 processor, which isn’t quite up there with the Snapdragon 845 (or indeed the Kirin 980 which powers the Mate 20 Pro), but is no slouch. For day-to-day use and the most intensive games, it’s a very solid performer, and you likely wouldn’t notice the difference.
Really, the only problem with the P20 Pro was the £800 price tag, and the fact the Mate 20 Pro is modestly better. Now that the P20 Pro can be had for £400 and the Mate 20 Pro is stubbornly sticking around the £900 mark, I know which I’d choose if I were buying today.
