Buy the brilliant Honor View 20 and get a free smartwatch
SIM-free and contract deals are available
One of the first smartphones of 2019 has certainly set a high bar for the year ahead. The Honor View 20 is a brilliant handset, packing Huawei’s super-fast 7nm Kirin 980 chip for superb performance. It also does away with the notch once and for all, replacing it with a small hole where the front-facing camera lives at the top left of the screen.
It’s a whole lot of phone for the mid-range price, basically, and if you act quickly it’s an even better deal. Right now, Honor is giving away a free Honor Watch Magic with every Honor View 20 handset sold between now and 6 February 2019 at participating retailers. After that, you just need to fill in a form with proof of purchase and your IMEI number, and Honor will ship you the smartwatch within 30 days.
We haven’t reviewed the Honor Watch Magic, but it looks a lot like the Huawei Watch GT right down to the same bespoke OS – albeit with a smaller battery. Still, given it retails for £180, it’s not bad for a freebie.
So where should you buy? Well, given the Honor View 20 only came out this week, RRP is being rigidly stuck to, so we’d just recommend Amazon for SIM-free purchases, where the phone goes for £499.99.
That’s still a big wodge of cash upfront, of course, so you probably want to split it out over the course of a 24-month contract. Luckily, there are some decent offers around here too.
For those that don’t mind getting their hands dirty with cashback (keep your bills and then send them in at set times for money back), then Mobile Phones Direct’s O2 deal is particularly impressive. Pay £41 per month (£31 after cashback), and you’ll get the Honor View 20 handset, unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and a frankly loopy 75GB of data. With the £240 worth of cashback, that comes to £744 over the life of the contract.
For those that can’t be bothered with cashback deals, you can pay £33 per month with O2 and get the same deal, but with a 15GB monthly data allowance. Still plenty for most people (I have 10GB, and barely use 4GB each month) at a cost of £792 over the life of the contract.
Whichever you end up with, you’re sure of an excellent phone. As Chris wrote in his review: “For £500, the View 20 is an incredible package: it’s worth remembering that the phones I’ve compared it go up to £889. Yet View 20 is as powerful as any of them, and arguably beats them all with its innovative notch-free design.
“The rear-facing camera might not win in every category, but it’s perfectly competent – and as a bonus, the phone retains the 3.5mm headphone jack. At this price, there’s simply nothing to compete with the Honor View 20.”
That’s true – and when you’re getting a free smartwatch as part of the deal, it’s an even bigger bargain.
