LG to launch new X-Cam and X-Screen phones at MWC 2016
The LG X-Cam and LG X-Screen will debut at MWC 2016 next week and go on sale in Europe next month
LG has announced it will be launching two new phones at this year’s MWC show in Barcelona alongside the highly-anticipated LG G5. Both phones, dubbed the X-Cam and X-Screen, will form part of a new series of LG handsets which specialise in certain key areas, bringing each one to an almost flagship-grade level while keeping the price down to rival other mid-range smartphones.
The X-Cam’s forte, for instance, is its camera. With a dual camera on the back made up of a 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensor, as well as a large 8-megapixel sensor on the front, LG says this will deliver “one of the most advanced camera experience[s] in a mass-tier smartphone”. It’s not yet certain how the dual cameras will work together, but we should know more next week when we get to have a look at them for ourselves at MWC.

The rest of the X-Cam’s specs look pretty impressive, too. It has a curved 5.2in, 1,920×1,080 resolution display, and it will be powered by an octa-core 1.14GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. Weighing a meagre 118g and measuring just 5.2mm thick at its thinnest point (its thickest is 6.9mm), it’s also extremely light and slim.
The X-Screen, on the other hand, has an additional ‘always-on’ screen, much like the LG V10. It’s also expected that the G5 will have a second ‘always-on’ screen as well, so to see this feature make its way to a phone lower down the range is good news for those who don’t want to pay full price for all the latest features.
This second, 1.76in screen will have a resolution of 520×80 and will sit on top of the X-Screen’s 4.93in 1,280×720 display. Here, users will be able to access their frequently used apps, answer calls without having to stop what you’re currently looking at on the main screen, and play music. It will also show the time, date, battery status and other notifications when the main screen is turned off, giving lots of handy information at a glance without having to switch on your phone.
The X-Screen won’t be quite as fast as the X-Cam, as it only has a quad-core 1.2GHz processor inside it, but it still has 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera.
Both phones will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow straight out of the box, and come in a variety of colours, including black, white and pink gold. They’ll start appearing on shop shelves from next month in Europe, but we’ll bring you our first impressions of each phone when see in them in the flesh next week at MWC.
