EE pelts out 150Mbps 4G+ mobile data in central London

Superfast 4G+ mobile data is now available in certain parts of central London although availibity is limited to certain handsets and EE plans. The 150Mbps network is available in areas around Kensington, Old Street, Shoreditch, Southbank, Soho and Westminster.

The 4G+ network uses 2.6GHz high capacity spectrum but only two phones currently sold by EE can access it – the Samsung Alpha and Samsung Note 4. As well as owning one of only two compatible handsets the new 4G+ network is only available to customers on EE’s 4GEE Extra of Corporate 4GEE plans.

EE said it plans to expand the network to all of Greater London by June 2015. It then plans to expand the network to other major cities including Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester, although it didn’t give a specific date as to when this would happen.

EE has been continually trumpeting its 4G infrastructure, which now covers 300 cities and large towns. Double-speed 4G, which runs up to around 60Mbps, is already available in 20 towns and cities with 20 more coming before the end of the year.

“We’ll keep investing to make sure that all our customers can get access to the great mobile technology that can make a real difference to the way they live their digital lives,” said EE boss Olaf Swantee.

Six million people are already signed up to EE’s 4G network. All the UK’s major mobile networks now support 4G, although EE had a head-start of nearly a year on rival networks. EE launched its 4G network in October 2012, with rivals O2 and Vodafone not offering the service until August 2013.
