Carphone Warehouse will refund Phones 4u iPhone 6 orders

Apple iPhone 6

Owner of retailer Carphone Warehouse says it will refund upfront cost of any iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders, but there's a catch

Dixons Carphone will reimburse people who pre-ordered an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus from Phones 4u. The retailer said that anyone who provided printed evidence of an iPhone 6 order with Phones 4u could get their money back, but only if they also place an order at Carphone Warehouse.

Phones 4u had initially promised to cancel and refund all phone pre-orders when it entered administration earlier this month. Last week administrator PwC said it would not be honouring pre-orders and that customers would need to contact their bank to try and get the money back.

Dixons Carphone, which encompasses Currys PC World and Carphone Warehouse, has stepped in to help eager Apple fans get their hands on the company’s latest handsets.

“We understand Phones 4u customers have been told they won’t receive a refund on their iPhone 6 pre-orders,” a spokesperson for the company explained.

“We don’t think that’s fair, so we are offering to reimburse Phones 4u customers for any money paid upfront when they buy their new iPhone 6 or 6 Plus from us.”

Phones 4u went into administration on 14 September, putting more than 5,500 jobs at risk. Since the start of 2014 the retailer had failed to renegotiate contracts with O2, Vodafone and EE leaving it with no product to sell.

Vodafone and EE have reached an agreement to take over 140 and 58 stores respectively, with the old Phones 4u shops being rebranded in the coming weeks. Administrator PwC has already confirmed that 1,697 people have lost their jobs with more redundancies are inevitable as the failed retailer is closed.
