Apple shifts over 10 MILLION iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Record sales on opening day and during opening weekend as iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus fly off shelves

Apple sold more than 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus during their first weekend on sale, a new record for the company. Both phones launched on 19 September with Apple saying that sales figures “exceeded expectations” over the weekend.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are already available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. Both models will launch in 20 additional countries on 26 September and be available in 115 countries by the end of the year.

The 10 million units sold is the highest number Apple has ever shifted during a launch weekend.

“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Apple boss Tim Cook. The company didn’t say which model had sold more but analysts have speculated that the larger iPhone 6 Plus was more in demand.

Last year the iPhone 5s and 5c sold a combined nine million units during the same three day period. A year earlier the iPhone 4s sold five million units in its opening weekend. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus also broke the record for opening day sales, with 4 million handsets sold in the first 24 hours on sale.

Apple has been struggling to keep up with demand for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, with Tom Cook saying it could have sold more:

“While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible,” Cook said.

Despite strong sales the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are still not available in China, the world’s largest smartphone market.
