LG G3 successor could be high-end LG G Prime

New trademark filings hint that LG could launch four new 'Prime' handsets in the future

Following in the footsteps of the rumoured Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime and the apparently cancelled HTC One (m8) Prime, LG could soon launch a Prime smartphone of its own.

Trademark applications in the US suggest that the follow-up to the LG G3 Android handset will have Prime in its name. Four filings for the G Prime, F Prime, L Prime and W Prime have all been made by LG.

The applications were made on 3 June with the USPTO. The names could apply to high-end versions of LG’s current smartphone line-up. The LG G3 could be complimented by the LG G Prime, the LG F series could be complimented by the LG F Prime and the LG L series could get an LG L Prime.

LG doesn’t currently have a W series of phones, but it could be that the W Prime will be a brand new Windows Phone 8.1 handset or possibly even a smartwatch running Android Wear.

Prime handsets, with better specifications than flagship smartphones, are likely to be the latest trend to flood the market. The rumoured Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime has been followed-up by the allegedly cancelled HTC One (m8) Prime.

The LG G3 is the company’s latest attempt to take on Samsung, Sony and the iPhone in the high-end smartphone market. The G3 has a 5.5in screen with a 2,560 by 1,440 resolution and 538 pixel density.

It runs on a 2.5Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and uses LG’s customised version of Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

If the trademark applications result in a premium version of the LG G3 then the LG G Prime is likely to have improved specifications.
