Text-to-switch: Changing mobile networks just got simpler
Mobile users can now switch providers simply by sending a text, thanks to new Ofcom regulations
New Ofcom regulations mean that mobile phone users will no longer need to navigate a lengthy exit procedure should they wish to cancel their contract. Under the new “text-to-switch” rules, customers can simply send a text message request to 65075; mobile network providers are required to respond within a minute with the necessary information.

The reasoning behind the new legislation is simple: Ofcom reports that when trying to leave their current contract, 31% of mobile network customers struggle with various unsolicited efforts by their provider to make them stay. Inevitably, an increasing number of people just can’t be bothered to deal with the hassle of switching provider, even if there are savings to be made elsewhere.
As of 1 July, however, customers need simply text ‘PAC’ to 65075 to receive their Port Authorisation Code – a crucial part of the exit process – and any other pertinent information regarding early termination fees from their provider. If you don’t want to keep your old number, you’ll need to text ‘STAC’ to 65075. Once you’ve received your code and handed it to your new provider, they have one working day to complete the switch.
Your old contract will now end on the same day that your new one begins, meaning you shouldn’t have to pay notice period charges. Provided you’re not leaving your contract early, you should never have to pay for more than one contract at once.
This is key: these rules are designed to ease the pain of switching at the end of your contract. They’re certainly not a metaphorical ejector seat to get you out of a contract midway through.
