Razer Mamba Hyperflux: The mouse that could change the way you game forever

You’re probably wondering why, of all the things announced at CES 2018, I’m writing about a new gaming mouse. This isn’t just any mouse though: this is Razer’s latest cutting-edge PC peripheral, and it’s a revolution in technical design and prowess.

In fact, the Razer Mamba Hyperflux and its companion – the Firefly Hyperflux mouse mat – have the potential to change how ALL wireless peripherals work. Thanks to the Firefly Hyperflux, the Mamba Hyperflux is a wireless mouse that’s completely battery-free.

Instead of drawing upon a clunky rechargeable or replaceable battery, the system uses a coil around the edge of the Firefly Hyperflux mat to deliver wireless power directly to the mouse. Don’t confuse this with wireless charging; it isn’t that at all. If you take your mouse off the mat for more than ten seconds or so, it’ll lose charge and switch off. The Firefly pad is powering the mouse directly.

By removing the battery, though, Razer has managed to address the key problem many players have with wireless gaming mice – weight. While Razer’s current wireless Mamba mouse weighs around 125g the Hyperflux comes in at under 100g. That may not sound like much, but for pro-level gamers, it’s a huge difference. Razer has also made significant efforts to ensure it doesn’t lose out when it comes to accuracy, equipping the Mamba with the same optical sensor as in the Razer Deathadder.

This isn’t the end of the line of Razer’s plans for battery-free peripherals, either; the “Hyperflux” is set to be the first in a new range. There’s no word yet on the details, but I’d expect Hyperflux keyboards to arrive in due time and perhaps even a way to deliver wireless charge to Razer headsets or game controllers further down the line. I’d also expect a lot of other manufacturers to follow suit.

The Razer Mamba Hyperflux and Firefly Hyperflux will be available worldwide in early 2018 at a price of $250 / €280 for both the mouse and the mat. At the time of writing, no UK price has been given, but I’d expect it to hit around the £250 mark.
