You can finally get YouTube on Amazon Fire TV again as Google and Amazon settle their differences

 The very public corporate spat between Google and Amazon has finally come to an end.

Fire TV users can once more watch videos on YouTube while viewers with Google Chromecast and Android TV devices can stream Amazon shows via Prime Video again.

It follows an 18-month feud that began in January 2018 when Google pulled its official YouTube app from its rivals’ Fire TV devices and the Amazon Echo Show. The tech giant complained that Amazon was refusing to sell its products on the Amazon website.

In April, the companies agreed to call a truce and Amazon began listing Google’s Nest thermostats and its Chromecast streaming devices on its store. The Google Home is still missing from the lineup, likely because it’s a direct competitor to Amazon’s Echo range of devices.

From today (9 July), the official YouTube app for Amazon Fire TV will be available in the UK on the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen) and Fire TV Stick 4K. It is also available on the Fire TV Cube and all Fire TV Edition smart TVs in the US. Other Fire TV devices worldwide will receive the app “in the coming months”, followed by the launch of YouTube Kids and YouTube TV into 2020.

You can find the new YouTube app in the “Your Apps and Channels” row on your Fire TV and it is also now compatible with Alexa voice controls. The first time you open this app tile, you’ll be prompted to download the app. Once installed, you can say “Alexa, open YouTube” or sign into the app using your existing YouTube account. This will sync your full library of content including subscriptions, playlists and recommendations to your Amazon Fire TV device. Where possible, you’ll be able to play compatible videos in 4K HDR at 60 fps on supported TVs and streaming devices, too.

Other Alexa YouTube commands include:

On the flip side, anyone with a Chromecast and Android TV now has access to the Prime Video catalogue. Prime Video lets Prime members stream films, TV shows, boxsets and sport at no additional cost, including 4K titles. It also gives you the option to rent or purchase thousands of titles.

Elsewhere, Prime members can add 70-plus channels to their Chromecast or Android TV including Discovery, ITV Hub+, Eurosport Player, Hayu, STARZPLAY and more. To use Chromecast on Prime Video, download the latest Prime Video version from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

In December, Chromecast and Android TV users who have Prime memberships will be able to watch Premier League football for no additional cost as well.

The truce comes less than a week before Amazon’s Prime Day 2019 in which Amazon offers exclusive discounts and deals to Prime members.
