Antivirus anarchist McAfee enters race to become president
Tech hell-raiser John McAfee wants to become the leader of the free world
He’s been on the run after being accused of murdering a business associate, admitted to drink and drugs addictions, and has publicly trashed the antivirus software company that still bears his name. Now the wild man of tech, John McAfee, is considering running again – this time against Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and co to become the 45th president of the US.
The McAfee founder has filed the necessary papers to enter the US presidential race and has launched his own McAfee 16 campaign website, which bears the George Washington quote: “Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism”.
He told Wired magazine that he doesn’t want to enter the race, but is struggling to find a better candidate who he can throw his support behind. “I personally am still in a quandary about whether to run myself or find someone else for my party,” he said. “My advisors are pressing me to run.”
And it’s not only his advisors who want to see McAfee in the White House, the 69 year old claims. “I have many thousands of emails saying please run for president,” he said. “It’s not something I would just choose to do on my own.”
A McAfee White House certainly wouldn’t lack colour. He fled Belize after being accused of murdering a business partner, although was never charged with any offence when police finally caught up with him in Guatemala. His hilarious but distinctly NSFW 2013 video, How To Uninstall McAfee Antivirus, was an expletive-filled rant against the now Intel-owned software, in which he’s depicted taking drugs whilst surrounded by semi-naked women. He’s also admitted to conducting an affair with a 16-year-old ex-prostitute.
In short, he makes Bill Clinton look like Mother Theresa, but does he have the resources or the votes to beat Mr Clinton’s wife? We suspect that’s a false positive.
