Casper vs Eve Original: Which foam mattress is best?
We’ve compared the two all-foam rivals to give you the lowdown on your lie down
We know it can be tricky trying to pick a new mattress, but if you’ve found your way here it suggests you’ve narrowed it down to just two, which is a good start.
We’ve awarded both the Casper and the Eve Original a solid 4 stars in our reviews and for good reason. Both impressed us in many areas and place proudly as contenders for the bed-in-a-box top spot.
Luckily for you, we’ve compared these two popular bed-in-a-box brands, looking at everything from construction, how comfortable and firm the mattresses feel, to price. We’ve left no pillow unturned.
Casper vs Eve: Construction and features
The main similarity in construction is that both are entirely constructed from foam, as opposed to hybrid rivals such as Otty and Simba, which include springs as well.
The Casper comprises four foam layers. The top layer is 33mm of open-cell foam which mimics the feel of latex. There’s also a 33mm layer of memory foam below that, a 33mm transitional layer and a 140mm foundation of supportive foam. It measures 240mm deep in total, which is standard for a mattress of this type.
The Eve is composed of three foam layers: 30mm of foam at the top, 35mm of softer memory foam below that and 160mm of dense, foam base. Despite having fewer layers, the Eve sits at a slightly deeper 250mm.
It’s advised you don’t flip these mattresses due to their specific layering. Instead, rotating is recommended to extend the life span of the product. The Casper should be rotated every three to six months and the Eve, similarly, every six months.
Both are Certipur certified, meaning independent testing has deemed these mattresses free from harmful chemicals. In addition, both benefit from an impressive ten-year warranty as well as a 100-day money-back guarantee.
Winner: Draw
While both have different construction – the Eve with three and the Casper with four layers – there is little setting these two apart. They both harbour supportive foam layers for a classic memory foam experience. Their upkeep is almost identical in regards to rotation and the same goes for their warranties.
Casper vs Eve: Comfort and performance
The Casper quickly expands on unpacking, reaching its full form after 24 hours. However, you’ll be able to sleep on it straight away if you don’t have the time to wait. Eve recommends you leave the mattress for four to five hours before using it.
Both emit a slight plasticky smell, something you’ll find with most mattresses of this type. This does dissipate after a short time so it isn’t a deal-breaker.
In terms of firmness, we felt the Casper was noticeably softer than the Eve. On first use, our reviewer felt the mattress provided “immediate comfort” and this continued throughout the night, however as with most foam mattresses, it did heat up noticeably. To get the most out of the Casper mattress, we recommend using it on a solid base as opposed to a slatted one.
We gave the Eve a rating of 7.5/10 for firmness (10 being the firmest). Our reviewer noted that there was less “sinkage” than is normal with many foam mattresses. He felt that, as the mattress warmed during the night, there was no adverse effect on the support offered and its firmness was retained and the mattress certainly lived up to the company’s claim as being more breathable than basic foam mattresses.
Winner: Eve
Although firmness is very much down to personal preference, the Eve takes the lead when it comes to comfort and performance because it works equally well on all types of foundation. We also found it slightly less warm than Casper. However, despite their cooling technology, you can expect both mattresses to feel slightly hotter than a traditional pocket sprung variety with natural fillings.
Casper vs Eve: Price
Once again, it’s a close-run thing when it comes to price. Both mattresses retail at £700 for a king, which is towards the higher end of the bed-in-a-box spectrum. However, we’ve noticed the Eve is discounted more often than its counterpart and by more significant margins. At the time of writing, for instance, the Eve is discounted by 20%, while the Casper is being sold at its starting price.
Winner: Eve
While they have the same retail price, if you’re happy to wait for a deal, you can normally get the Eve for less than Casper.
Casper vs Eve: Verdict
If you are looking for an all-round impressive mattress in the bed-in-a-box category, both the Eve and the Casper would be solid picks. They are similar in many respects minus the slight difference in firmness.
However, thanks to its versatility and the fact you can normally pick it up for a slightly lower price, the Eve just edges it in this close head to head. Of course, when they both come with a 100-night money-back guarantee, there’s nothing to stop you picking the one you like the look of and returning it for a full refund if it doesn’t work out.
