NXIVM (pronounced Nex-ee-um) gained a serious number of influential and wealthy followers during its period of activity, including Prince William’s third cousin, Catherine Oxenberg. Though it promised greater self-awareness, as well as professional development through its courses, the group soon became entangled in a web of accusations, which included slavery and sexual abuse.
The series initially came about when director Noujaim took a NXIVM course, after being recruited herself. Hearing about alleged abuse within the organisation, she and Karim Amer started documenting every step, speaking to its followers and recruiters.
The first episode aired on HBO on 23 August 2020, with the final part of series one hitting screens on 18 October. A second series has already been confirmed and will follow the criminal trial of Keith Raniere, as well as some of his still loyal supporters.
