Remington G4 Graphite multi grooming kit review: One trimmer for all your grooming needs

The Remington G4 is one of five trimmers in the company’s Graphite range, sitting alongside the cheaper G2 and G3 as well as the premium G5 and G6. Priced at £40, it comes with a range of attachments to let you perform practically any grooming task from the comfort of your own home. There are better trimmers on the market but if you’re looking for versatility and excellent value, the G4 takes some beating.

Remington G4: What do you get for the money?

The G4 comes with more attachments than either of its cheaper stablemates. It has a main trimmer and adjustable comb; no.1 (3mm) and no.0 (1.5mm) fixed combs; a mini foil shaver and a nose-, ear- and eyebrow-trimmer. Last but not least, there’s a TST (trim shave technology) precision trimmer, which offers an extra close trim, great for tidying neck and cheek lines.

Overall, then, it’s capable of trimming your beard to any length between 0.2mm and 20mm, which is very versatile indeed. As for other features, the trimmer offers both cordless and corded use (the cheaper G2 and G3 are cordless only) and delivers up to 60 minutes of run time from a single ten-hour charge. To make it easier to keep tabs on all those attachments, the Graphite G4 also has a handy travel carry pouch.

Remington G4: What’s it like to use?

Switching attachments on the G4 is as quick and easy as giving them a twist. I found most of the attachments worked well, too. The main beard trimmer made light work of my mid-length beard and offered excellent precision when trimming my lip line.

As for the nose trimmer, that does exactly what it says on the tin and although you wouldn’t want to use the mini foil shaver to shave your whole face – it really is rather tiny – it did a decent job removing any stubble left by the TST trimmer. Although the latter definitely gets a closer cut than the regular trimmer, it’s slow and fiddly by comparison because the attachment needs to be flush to your skin at all times.

The fixed combs are a handy addition, especially if you want to quickly trim the hairs on your face, head or body to one set length. I shaved my head all over with the 1.5mm guard and although I’d rather use a dedicated hair clipper, it’ll do the job if you don’t want to buy more than one appliance.

All of the blades can be cleaned by rinsing them under running water, but it’s a good idea to apply a little oil after doing so to keep the attachments running smoothly. 

Remington G4: What isn’t it good at?

The width of the blade on the main trimmer is slightly narrower than other beard trimmers I’ve tested, so I found myself running it over my beard more times as a result. It’s also worth noting that, although you can run the attachment heads under the tap, the handle isn’t water-resistant, so you can’t use it in the shower.

The slider to change the comb length on this trimmer also feels a bit cheap and plasticky. Surprisingly, I much prefer the wheel on the cheaper Remington Barba Trimmer.

It’s also worth noting that, if you have a long beard and go many days or even weeks between trims, longer hair can get stuck between the comb and trimmer. The rather slow, 10-hour charge time is another thing that isn’t ideal.

Should I buy the Remington G4?

Sure. If you want a product that offers a super close trim and that also works as a foil shaver and nose- and ear-hair trimmer then the Remington fits the bill perfectly. There’s no other product that offers such a range of attachments at a lower price.

However, if you aren’t fussed about the mini foil and nose and ear attachments, I’d recommend saving a few quid and opting for the Remington Barba instead. It’s the best-value trimmer on the market if you’re looking for a simple, no-frills option.

Alternatively, if you want a do-it-all trimmer that you can also use in the shower, the 9-in-1 Braun Wet & Dry trimmer is a very worthy consideration at £60.
