Bring a breath of fresh air into your home this summer with Dyson’s 2-in-1 fans

Dyson advertorial - the Dyson HP09 in an empty room

Whether it’s hay fever or the heat making life miserable, turn to a multitasking marvel that freshens indoor air while keeping you cool

Many people – including myself – would pick summer as their favourite season. It’s easy to see why: outdoor living (when it’s not raining) and the long, lazy days have endless appeal. But the flip side is that inside living becomes a challenge when the mercury rises. Sleep-poor nights and sticky days caused by stifling heat, plus the seemingly inescapable pollen, takes the shine off the warmer months.

Tired of constant sneezing, humid days at my desk and broken sleep, I went in search of an effective solution for making summer my favourite time of year again.

Pure and simple

This is how I found my way to Dyson’s range of genius 2-in-1 fans. What makes them different is that unlike ordinary fans, they don’t just move the same air around a room. Each 2-in-1 fan purifies the air while creating a fresh feel, keeping your home cool and comfortable as well as reducing any sneaky pollen and other particles that might have found their way inside.

Not only does this mean better quality air inside your home, it’s ideal for those who suffer from hay fever – no more dry throats, runny eyes or tickly noses – or simply those who get a sniffle at certain times of year, like myself.

Cleaner, cooler air

I decided to try Dyson’s clever tech in my own home. It makes three fans that purify the air: the TP10, HP09 and TP09. If you’re after an amazing fan without the purification, the AM07 tower fan is also brilliant at cooling large spaces fast. Stylish, powerful and pioneering, its purifying fans aren’t just clever, they have Dyson’s long history of engineering excellence and innovation built right in.

The star product of Dyson’s air purifying fan collection is the HP09. It doubles up as a heater in the cooler months but in summer it excels, with a HEPA 13 filter to capture even the smallest pollutants and formaldehyde: a VOC emitted by multiple sources at home.

If you don’t need your purifying fan to function as a heater, the TP09 could be just right for your home. It still boasts a HEPA 13 filter and will destroy formaldehyde, but is focused on cooling you down while thoroughly freshening indoor air.

Also equipped with a HEPA filter, the TP10 is a great all-rounder. It automatically senses and captures pollutants, delivering cleaner air for a fresh, cool feel in any room.

Summer saviour

I spend a lot of time at home – it’s not just where I live, but also where I work and keep fit – so I was able to try out the Dyson HP09 in several spaces.

The first thing I noticed is how sleek it is: the filters are located on the base and covered by copper-toned grilles. Compared to my usual tower fan, it’s beautifully designed, quieter and can be tilted forward or backwards easily. I liked the choice of oscillation range: using the small remote, it can be set to 45-degrees, 90-degrees, 180-degrees or an almost full rotation of 350-degrees. It can also be switched off completely, if you prefer. Other impressive design features include switching airflow direction, different speeds and a timer. The HP09 also has a handy auto mode: a setting more tailored to purifying the air as it switches itself off after the quality has improved.

For the most part, the HP09 sat next to me in my office. As that’s in the garden, the office is prone to gusts of outdoor air when the sliding door is opened and closed. Over the course of several days, I noticed that I hardly sneezed at all when at my desk and found the auto mode especially useful as it was so unobtrusive. Crucially, I never felt buffeted by the breeze it created, just cool and fresh. Dyson HP09 fan in the bedroom

A few times a week, I used the HP09 in my fitness area. This is less fancy than it sounds: it’s a shed with power and also where my tumble dryer lives. This means that its biggest problem is airborne fabric fibres and dust. When I moved it into my home gym, the HP09 immediately detected the difference in air quality and the screen notified me of the fact that quality was much worse than in my office. It also detected that the relative humidity was higher during my workouts.

The bedroom was where the HP09 excelled, though. I still own an original Air Multiplier and usually use it on warmer nights, as it’s the only fan I’ve ever been able to sleep alongside. However, my current fan only circulates air and doesn’t treat it, meaning the HP09 was a vast improvement. A night mode darkens the screen, so it won’t keep you awake and the default setting is a gentle speed of 4 out of a possible 10. This is perfect for all-night cooling, if it’s not right for you, though, you can change this. Most importantly, I slept solidly with the HP09 softly purring in the background.

Overall, during my time with the Dyson HP09 I felt more relaxed, enjoyed fresher air indoors, and was pleased to be rid of my pollen-induced sneezing. Better still, feeling cool at my desk helped me to focus more easily on work. It seems that all it took to make summer my favourite season again was a problem-solving, advanced air purifying Dyson fan.

What a breeze.
