Nikon 1 AW1 launched as worlds first waterproof interchangeable lens camera

Nikon has introduced the Nikon 1 AW1, a waterproof interchangeable lens camera that’s not only a first for the company, but a first for the photography industry as a whole.

The AW1 is based on the Nikon 1 J1, originally launched in 2011, but with seriously resilient construction. Not only will it keep shooting in up to 49 feet of water, it’s shockproof from heights of up to 2m and freezeproof down to -10 degrees centigrade. Even the pop-up flash is waterproof down to 15m.

It seems purpose built for Bear Grylls-types, with an integrated altimeter, depth gauge, electronic compass, and horizon indicator, along with GPS for geo-tagging your photos and an optional Wi-Fi adaptor for wireless uploads. Custom white balance modes account for underwater shooting and there’s also a scuba mode too.

The camera itself uses the same CX-format CMOS sensor as the J1, and although the pixel count has been bumped up to 14.2-megapixels it’s still significantly smaller than other interchangeable lens cameras. It can capture stills at 15fps, hitting 60fps if you lock the autofocus, and captures 1080p video. Slow motion modes let you shoot at either 400fps or a massive 1,200fps, albeit at 320×120.

The obvious downside is that, unless you buy specific rugged lenses, you won’t be able to take the AW1 for a dip with Nikon’s existing range of Nikon 1 mount lenses. The company is launching two alongside the AW1: an 11-27.5mm, f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens and a wide-angle 10mm, f/2.8 lens – although this equates to a 27mm equivalent at 35mm so won’t produce the same wide angle images as an APS-C or full-frame DSLR.

You’ll be able to pick up a Nikon 1 AW1 in either white, black or silver with the 11-27.5m lens for £749, or get a dual lens kit for £949. The 10mm lens will also be available individually for £299. All three go on sale on the 10th of October.
