Samsung S24C570HL review
A slim monitor with good contrast, but its colour accuracy isn't good enough to justify the price
Specifications
23.6in screen size, 1,920×1,080 resolution, DVI: no, VGA: yes, HDMI:
The Samsung S24C570HL is a 23.6in monitor with a 1,920×1,080 resolution. The S24C570HL’s glossy black base and bezel may look utilitarian, but its plastic crystal stand and slim bezel help to keep it looking smart and stylish in your home.
The S24C570HL uses a Samsung AD-PLS panel. It’s similar to an IPS panel, but Samsung claims PLS panels provide better viewing angles, increased image quality and a brighter display.
The monitor’s viewing angles were certainly impressive. We were able to see the screen clearly even when we were side-on, but we were quite disappointed with its overall image quality. Straight out of the box, our colour calibrator revealed the S24C570HL was only showing 87.6 per cent of the sRGB colour gamut at its default settings. Its blue coverage was very good, but it was short on both the green and red colour gamuts, which made images look cool.
We were able to increase this to a more respectable 91.6 per cent after calibration, but this is still much lower than what we’d normally expect from this kind of panel. For instance, the Samsung S24C650PL, which uses the same type of panel, scored 96.9 per cent at its default settings. We managed to improve the S24C570HL’s red and purple coverage, but we weren’t able to increase its green coverage at all. This made images look much warmer than before, with lighter colours suffering the most.
Even after calibration, it fell short of what we expected from an AD-PLS panel
Whites were noticeably pink in our solid colour image tests compared to our reference monitor, but we were pleased to see the S24C570HL’s low black level reading of 0.25cd/m² didn’t affect the depth of its blacks. However, we did notice that the bottom right-hand corner of the screen was slightly blue compared to the rest of the screen in our solid black test, which disrupted its overall colour uniformity. This was a little disappointing, as our reds, greens and blues looked great.
