Samsung UD590 4K UHD monitor now available to pre-order

Samsung's first Ultra High Definition 4K computer monitor is now available to pre-order in the UK, for a very reasonable price

Samsung has confirmed that the UD590, the company’s first Ultra High Definition 4K computer monitor, is now available to pre-order here in the UK – and unlike the living room-sized 4K TVs that arrived earlier in the year, this is one 4K screen that won’t break the bank.

Samsung UD590

The 28in display will take up a large chunk of space on a desk, but the 3,840×2,160 resolution will provide more than twice the amount of usable screen space compared to a 1080p screen of the same size. It uses a TN panel, which Samsung says can deliver 1ms grey-to-grey response times, a dynamic contrast ratio of 10,000,000 and 300cd/m2 peak brightness. Samsung has also added a dedicated gaming mode which it promises creates “deeper blacks and reduced motion blur”.

Unlike some of the cheaper 4K panels starting to arrive in the UK, the UD590 supports 60Hz refresh rates (using a DisplayPort connection). It also includes twin HDMI inputs and will support picture in picture, letting you run two PCs side-by-side at 1,920×2,160. Although Samsung’s press release doesn’t go into specifics, the proprietary UHD upscaling technology should be able to improve low resolution content when displayed at 4K – including games consoles like Sony’s PS4 and the Microsoft Xbox One.

In case you aren’t convinced by the UD590’s gaming credentials, Samsung has struck a deal with Ubisoft to bundle a copy of open-world hacking adventure Watch_Dogs with every monitor sold.

The UD590 will be going on sale exclusively at Overclockers from the 1st of June, before going on general sale through the likes of Argos, Currys and PC World on the High Street, eBuyer and Amazon online, and directly through the Samsung eStore. You can place a pre-order now, with prices currently listed at £499.

We’re hoping to get a closer look at one soon, so be sure to check back for a full review.
